Scuba diving in Marseille with English-speaking instructors

Marseille is one of the best diving cities in Europe: the Calanques National Park starts inside the city limits, the water is clear from June to November, and the seabed drops quickly to walls, caves and wrecks. It is also where Jacques Cousteau tested the Aqua-Lung in 1943, off the Frioul islands. What the city does less well is diving in English. Here is how to organise it.

The sites

• Frioul archipelago. Twenty minutes from the Vieux-Port. Sheltered coves for beginners, the Tiboulen de Ratonneau and the Pharillons for drop-offs, groupers and barracudas. The go-to area when the mistral blows.
• Île Maïre and Les Goudes. At the southern tip of the city: the Impériaux rocks, the tunnel of the Grotte à Corail, walls to 40 m. Advanced, spectacular, exposed to east wind.
• The Calanques. Sormiou, Morgiou, Riou island and its wrecks. Riou is the richest site in the park; boats leave from the Pointe Rouge.
• Wrecks. The Liban (1903) off Île Maïre at 30 m, the Chaouen cargo ship on Planier island lying on its side from 8 to 35 m, one of the most photogenic wrecks in the Mediterranean. Planier is a 45-minute boat ride; centres run it a few times a week in season.
• The Cosquer cave is closed to divers; its painted chamber is reproduced full-size next to the MuCEM.

How French dive clubs work

France has two systems side by side: the federal FFESSM clubs (associations, cheap, members’ schedules, French only) and the professional centres (SSI, PADI or French CMAS-equivalents, open to visitors, English more likely). As a visitor you want the second kind. Bring your certification card and logbook; a medical certificate is required for training courses but usually not for a fun dive. Equipment rental is included or a small extra. Most centres are at the Pointe Rouge marina and in Les Goudes, a few at the Vieux-Port and L’Estaque.

What it costs

Indicative 2026 ranges seen on centre websites: a discovery dive (baptême, one instructor for one or two beginners, 20 minutes at 6 m) is priced like a good restaurant dinner; a single fun dive with equipment somewhat less; a two-tank morning by boat, equipment included, roughly double; the Planier wrecks carry a supplement for the longer boat ride. Open Water courses take three to four days. Book ahead in July and August and for Planier.

Getting an English briefing

A briefing you do not understand is a safety problem, not a comfort problem. Ask three questions before booking: will the site briefing be in English, will my buddy or the instructor speak English underwater-sign-language aside, and how many divers per guide? Centres used to cruise passengers and to the international students of the Luminy campus will say yes without hesitation. Booking through a platform that lists languages and shows recent English reviews is the simplest filter. Read the most recent reviews, not the average.

Snorkelling instead

No certification, no boat, no problem: the underwater trail at the Catalans beach has ten sculptures at 5 m depth, free with a mask; the coves of Malmousque and Les Goudes and the Frioul beaches have clear water and fish from June. The park asks you not to touch anything and to keep off the seagrass.
